Microsoft will end support for Vista in April 2017, which means the OS will cease receiving security updates all together—just like Windows 8 and XP. I couldn't have picked a worse time to think about going back to Windows, really. The idea was inherently flawed and ultimately failed. I felt I may be able to explain the question somewhat from the previous commenter.
It almost tastes like a gov't conspiracy! So, while it's true that some of the basic tasks like browsing, video or music consumption or word editing can be equally done on Linux, anything more advanced presents a problem.If It's not as though it's merged in with the operating system. So far that laptop has escaped the forced updates etc.
Once you get familiar with the whole linux method as a whole, then you can install it on your OS.
